Peace & Blessings Beloved,
I pray all is well with you and yours, and that your week has been fruitful & blessed thus far.
Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Full context: throughout this 12th chapter of Mark, we witness Jesus debating the Jewish authorities of the time, namely the Pharisees, Herodians, & Sadducees. He begins the chapter with a parable of the tenant farmers to illustrate how man continues to reject God’s son-Jesus, to their own peril. He then has a debate with them about taxes, as they attempt to trap Him into being cast as a hypocrite, and/or revolutionary. Jesus provides yet another lesson regarding how we should respect the law of the land, but much more importantly, respect the law of God, which like the image of the Roman emperor was stamped on the currency of that day, is stamped on our hearts. The next question is regarding resurrection, in which the Sadducees attempted to mock the idea of the body coming back to life after death. Jesus once again schools them on the actual concept of the soul living forever. This brings us to the above verse, in which Jesus answers a scribe’s question of what the first commandment is.
Commandment- a divine (spiritual) rule, which must be obeyed.
As we experience another day, it is my prayer that we‘ve been intentional about allowing Jesus/God/Holy Spirit to be the dominating influence in our lives.
In the above passage, we touch on the concept of commandment, which we know is a requirement from God, one that must be obeyed, based on our relationship with Him.
We see that Jesus lays out how we ought to see and treat God. There should be a holy reverence for who He is, what He is, & how He is. And that reverence should be manifested in a devoted, sacrificial love, a giving of self for service to God.
The reference to our heart, soul, & strength means that He should be honored in our thoughts, words, & actions, and that He alone should fuel our decisions, knowing that He will never mislead us, but will always get us to our destination in perfect timing.
In other words, we should be consumed by our love for God.
May the joy of the Lord continue to be your strength.
Love you much, be abundantly blessed!
